A lot of people with neurological disease require palliative care. Diseases like Parkinson’s, Motor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis (MS)and other neurological conditions, such as stroke, brain injury and brain tumours can benefit from palliative care. Neurological conditions normally tend to have high symptom burdens, variable disease courses and poor prognosis that affect not only the patients but their families and caregivers. Palliative care relieves symptoms and improves the quality of life of people with neurological disease. People with MS, Parkinson’s etc have improvement in quality of life and also experience decrease in pain, dyspnoea, sleep disturbances and bowel symptoms. The emphasis is on managing symptoms, maintaining mobility, adjusting to cognitive decline. Palliative care also encourages patients and families to discuss the prognosis and advance care planning.
